Help Your Child To Avoid Adult Health Worries

We see far too many parents these days willing to keep their child subdued with food treats in the hope that they will be still and quiet, needing less attention. This is lazy parenting and quite clear that the parents either don’t know or don’t care about the knock on effects that this behaviour brings about.

Some parents think that they will score points with their offspring, bringing favour and unconditional love if they give their child everything they ask for. This is not showing love to a child. Sometimes saying no is more loving than giving in.

So, what are the knock on effects and are they really that bad? Given that the incidents of childhood obesity have doubled in the last 25 years, the physical effects of obesity in childhood and later life cannot be ignored.

This is the reason that health insurance companies request information on weight, height and diet. Weight is a serious issue and responsible for a great many health problems that the health insurance companies may well end up paying out for. The higher the weight, the more the health insurance premiums will cost and the higher the risk to your overall health and length and quality of life.

This all begins in early childhood and the diet we receive from our parents is vital in determining our health later on in life. Fat cells are manufactured in the first few years of life to accommodate the amount of fat consumed. At some point the body stops making fat cells and we then have the amount of fat cells that will stay with us for the rest of our lives. They will expand or shrink depending upon the amount of fat we consume but we cannot change the amount in existence.

Massive studies have been conducted throughout various countries and it has been observed that thirteen is a bit of a turning point when it comes to the age of a child’s obesity causing lasting effects. For children that are obese, the risk of adult coronary heart disease was proportionally higher. If a child is obese at the age of seven, a sensible diet and exercise plan will reverse some of the damage done. If a child is still obese by the age of thirteen then the chances that they will suffer coronary heart disease between the ages of 25 and 60, are up by 33%.

Of course, there are other factors that can contribute to a child being overweight, but if the reason is purely taking in more energy than is being expended, then this child is exposed to the risk of heart disease, diabetes, vascular abnormalities, thrombosis, stroke and premature death. Health insurance companies are well aware of these factors because they pay out for health care to try and put it right all the time.

In the UK alone, one in ten children six year old children are considered obese. This has doubled in the last twenty five years and this is the time when parents need to nip it in the bud. The government are rolling out initiatives to educate parents and children about healthier lifestyles and diets and it takes a concerted effort for us all to stick to.

If we could take a look inside our bodies at what we are doing, if we could take a look into the future and see not only the health problems that will be avoided but all the heartache that goes with it, we may think twice before we shut our babies up with more food.

Health expert Catherine Harvey looks at the effects that obesity can have on life insurance premiums and what we can do about it.

Switch To HEPA Filters And Breathe Easier

Having a respiratory illness can, at times be debilitating and leave the sufferer feeling uncomfortable and unable to breath properly without difficultly. If you have breathing problems then you will understand just how problematic it can be to be in an environment that is stuffy and stale with dust particles and other debris floating around. Just a few minutes spent in a room that is poorly ventilated can be agony and leave the sufferer feeling ill for some time. One of the best ways in which to avoid situations like this is to use a good filtration system.

Today the best filter that is around and can be a massive a help for anyone with breathing problems and allergies is a HEPA filter. HEPA or high efficiency particulate air filters are the only filter that can eliminate 99.995% of all airborne particles, leaving the air fresh and clean without any pollutants. This makes them the ideal choice for anyone who has trouble breathing, suffers from allergies or begins to feel unwell when in an atmosphere that is stale with little ventilation.

When HEPA filters were first developed they were primarily used in hospitals to aid health and prevent the spread of airborne bacteria. These filters were also fitted with ultraviolet, high energy light units which were designed to kill any remaining bacteria that were attached to the filters. Although these type of filters are not needed in the home or office they are still used in hospitals to stop the spread of illnesses.

If you are looking to change the filters in your home or workplace to HEPA ones you are making the right decision as HEPA filters will make the world of difference to the air quality in your home or office. You can fit HEPA filters into your air conditioning system which will mean that the risk of breathing problems due to dust, dust mite faeces, pollen and other irritants is reduced significantly. You can easily fit HEPA filters into your air conditioning system without the need to replace anything else or incur extra cost other than that of the filters.

Perhaps you would like to have even greater protection from other allergy inducing particles such as pet dander or dust and mites in carpets and upholstery. If this is the case you should invest in a HEPA filter vacuum cleaner which will get rid of 99.995% of the particles hidden in fabrics which also contribute to poor breathing.

One thing is for sure, when you switch your regular filters in your air conditioner to HEPA filters you will soon be breathing the cleanest air you can, and you will feel much better for it. So if you value your health and the health of your family or workforce use HEPA filters. If you need assistance with changing your filters in your air conditioning system get in touch with your local HVAC professional who can help you with a filter solution to meet your needs perfectly.

The Facts About Allergy Shots

Some allergens are simply impossible to avoid. You cannot live a normal life and completely avoid pollen, dust mites, mold spores, and certain other common triggers of allergic reactions.

Many allergy sufferers use medications such as antihistamines and steroid nasal sprays to suppress their symptoms, and these medications are very effective in most. For people with very severe symptoms, and those who cannot take allergy medications, immunotherapy is an alternative.

Immunotherapy is the name for a treatment used by allergy specialists (allergists) to reduce sensitivity to allergens. This therapy is particularly useful for people with allergic rhinitis (sometimes called hay fever). Immunotherapy involves a series of injections (shots) given regularly for several years. In the past, this was called a serum, but this is an incorrect name.

Most allergists now call this mixture an allergy extract. The first shots contain very tiny amounts of the antigen or antigens to which you are allergic. With progressively increasing dosages over time, your body will adjust to the antigen and become less sensitive to it. This process is called desensitization.

Immunotherapy is the only available treatment that can modify the natural course of the allergic disease. This means that a 3- to 5-year regimen of injections may result in long-term benefits that extend well beyond the completion of the regimen. Immunotherapy does not work for everyone and is only partly effective in some people, but it offers allergy sufferers the chance of eventually stopping medication or reducing the amount they have to take.

Immunotherapy does not treat symptoms; it treats the immune system, the source of all allergic reactions. Although the exact details of how allergy shots work is unknown, we do know the general way they affect the immune system.

An allergic reaction occurs when the body is exposed to an external substance (the antigen) that the immune system interprets as a foreign invader. In allergic individuals, the immune system then makes an unusual (allergic) response that harms the body.

The white blood cells produce an antibody to the antigen called immunoglobulin E, or IgE. This is called sensitization. When the antibody comes in contact with the antigen, it promotes release of certain chemicals called mediators into affected tissues. Histamine is an example of a mediator.

It is the effects of mediators on organs and cells that cause the symptoms of allergic reactions. This overreaction to a harmless substance is often called a hypersensitivity reaction.

Allergy shots desensitize you by turning down this immune response to the antigen. As a result of immunotherapy, the white blood cells no longer respond as strongly to the antigen, and less production of the immunoglobulin E antibody to this antigen occurs. So, when you are exposed to this antigen, less severe allergic reactions occur in affected areas like the eyes, nasal mucosal surfaces, and the bronchial airways.

Is Aromatherapy The Best Choice For People With Insomnia?

Aromatherapy can be such an exciting method to use in overcoming insomnia. Experimenting with the right scent for your body composition is a fun way to become in tune with yourself and what you like. Every person’s body reacts to scents in different ways, so different fragrances can produce a different response in the brain.

Picture yourself lying in a field of beautiful flowers. Feeling relaxed in the warmth of the sun, you inhale every bit of goodness that surrounds you, and it fills your whole body with delightful pleasure. The aromas that you inhale make you feel at ease and calm. You think to yourself that you could sleep right here for hours. Now why couldn’t you take this feeling into your bedroom permanently?

Well, you can…

Aromatherapy is the best choice for people who want to teach their bodies to fall asleep gently and naturally, while feeling oh, so good inside. What is so great about using aromatherapy to fall asleep is that there is no harm, no addiction, and no gimmicks involved. It is all natural. If you enjoy the scent – lavender, you will be lulled off into a deep slumber.

Aromatherapy supports wellness by providing numerous ways to improve personal well-being with safe natural ingredients that offer no harmful side effects. Be adventurous and start acquiring essential oils even if you lack familiarity with them. Essential oils perform their healthy work both topically and internally. Essential oils also diffuse into the air providing purifying, refreshing, calming, and stimulating benefits. Aromatherapy’s remarkable benefits should come as no surprise. For thousands of years people have used plants to affect moods and create atmosphere. The modern pharmaceutical industry was also originally based on medicines derived from plants. Early on, this industry chose to focus on isolating the components of plants that seemed most effective taken alone in high concentration. True aromatherapy, on the other hand, is in the tradition of herbal medicine that teaches that the whole plant can cause fewer (or no) side effects.

Part of winning the battle against insomnia is all about having the right atmosphere. Using aromatherapy is done in a wide variety of ways. Sleeping mist can be gently sprayed on pillows and linens, candles can be lit safely until you are ready to fall asleep, or sachets can be placed nearby for a more mellow fragrance. Whichever way you choose to go about it, this is definitely a great technique for your body and mind. You will create a whole aura of peace and goodness that will make your insomnia a thing of the past.

You Can Take Vitamins To Improve Your Cholesterol

If you have an usual elevated cholesterol level, you have a chance of getting heart disease. It won’t happen right away. Heart disease comes on slowly if you maintain a elevated cholesterol level as you get older.

Prescription medicine can be used to reduce your cholesterol levels. HMG-CoA Inhibitors are also known as “statins” and are the most popular medicines that are used to help cholesterol levels. These medicines stop the HMG-CoA enzyme and do not allow cholesterol to be produced from fat. Statins are the most powerful medicines currently available and are proven to be of great benefit for people who need to decrease their cholesterol levels.

Other medicines that decrease cholesterol are bile acid sequestrants and this medicine attaches itself to the bile in the liver. Bile is necessary for digestion and allows fat to be to absorbed. People take bile acid sequestrants to stop fat from being digested in bile.

There are more natural ways to reduce cholesterol with vitamins. The most important vitamin is B3 which is also know as niacin. Niacin assists the body in making glucose from carbohydrates and this is used to refuel the body. The whole group of B vitamins have many purposes that are crucial to utilizing fat and protein in the body, including keeping your nervous system balanced, healthy skin, hair, mouth and liver. Niacin also cleanses the body of dangerous chemicals.

It has also been discovered that niacin works with cholesterol reducing medicine and it makes it more effective. However, you have to take a mega dose of Niacin for it to do any good. People have to be careful of attempting to self medicate themselves with big doses of Niacin. There are side effects associated with high does of Niacin, such as flushed skin caused by blood vessels dilating, itching, headaches, upset stomach and cramps in your muscles.

Vitamins C and E have also been shown to assist the body in reducing cholesterol levels because these two vitamins help avoid heart disease by saving LDL cholesterol from being damaged. Many cardiologists think that LDL cholesterol is not necessarily all bad and does not causes heart disease unless it is damaged. Another substance Lecithin also contributes to lowering cholesterol when it takes out excess cholesterol from your body and cleans out the fat in your arteries.

These are all various suggestions to improve your cholesterol and you can discuss this with your doctor so you can make the best decision about what to do.

The Treatment For Hay Fever

Hay fever does not always require medical treatment. Avoid known or suspected allergens. Hay fever symptoms lend themselves to home treatment.

Gargle with warm salt water, 1-2 tablespoons of table salt in 8 ounces of warm water, to soothe a mildly sore throat. Take nonprescription antihistamines such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) to relieve symptoms of sneezing, runny nose, and itchy throat and eyes. Caution these medications may make you too drowsy to drive a car or operate machinery safely.

For stuffy nose, a combination of an antihistamine and a decongestant such as pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, Actifed) may work better. The best treatment overall is to avoid contact with your allergen. Since this is rarely possible, you may want to take medication to reduce the symptoms.

The treatment of hay fever depends on the severity, symptoms, and consequences of the disease. The medications most often used to treat hay fever symptoms are listed in the next paragraph.

These sprays work very well in most people with few of the side effects of corticosteroids taken by mouth or by injection. They reduce congestion (stuffiness) and swelling. Examples are beclomethasone (Beconase), triamcinolone (Nasacort), and fluticasone (Flonase).

These are not the steroids taken by some people to increase athletic performance. Sprays take a few days to work, but when they reach an effective level, they do a very good job of decreasing symptoms without causing drowsiness. They must be used daily if they are to work properly.

Nonprescription antihistamines (diphenhydramine [Benadryl], clemastine [Tavist], tripelennamine [PBZ], hydroxyzine [Atarax]) are the most commonly used drugs. Loratadine (Claritin), a long-acting, nonsedating antihistamine is also now available without a prescription.

These antihistamines are inexpensive and readily available. The effects do not last long. They may make you too drowsy to drive a car or operate machinery safely. You may start using them at bedtime. Drowsiness often lessens with continued, regular dosage.

Many hay fever sufferers choose to take longer acting prescription antihistamines, such as fexofenadine (Allegra), loratadine (Claritin), and desloratadine (Clarinex). These drugs are more expensive, but they have to be taken only once or twice a day. The biggest advantage of these drugs is that they cause only mild sleepiness, if any at all.

Montelukast (Singulair) is a leukotriene inhibitor approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of hay fever. It is available with a prescription and comes in tablet, chewable tablet, or granule forms. The granules may be sprinkled directly on the tongue or mixed with cold or room temperature soft food like applesauce or pudding.

Leukotrienes are powerful chemical substances that promote the inflammatory response seen during exposure to allergens. By keeping these chemicals from producing swelling, leukotriene inhibitors reduce inflammation. Leukotriene inhibitors are particularly effective when used with an antihistamine.

Study Uncovers Mesothelioma Link to Nanotechnology

Mesothelioma has long been linked to the inhalation and exposure to asbestos fibers and dust, so when scientists uncovered an additional potential cause for this incurable form of lung cancer, the unthinkable became a reality.

According to researchers based out of the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars in Washington D.C., the early 90′s development of carbon nanotubes has been an amazing feat for technological applications, however, it has not gone without its price. Specifically, carbon nanotubes may be causing harm to the human body in the form of mesothelioma cancer.
If the carbon nanotubes are introduced into the wrong environment, the development of lesions and inflammation of the lungs occurs – symptoms similar to that of mesothelioma cancer and asbestos exposure. Researchers uncovered the finding through exposure of carbon nanotubes to animals.
Dr. Andrew Maynard, who published a study in the journal Nature Nanotechnology, described the use of nanotubes and the potential link to mesothelioma cancer. He said that currently, nanotubes are being implemented because of their awesome abilities at conducting heat and electricity. Mostly, Dr. Maynard explains, the nanotubes are being implemented into sports equipment. He said that there are no regulations as to where nanotubes can be implemented and there are currently no requirements for the use of nanotubes to be disclosed to the general public.

What Are Nanotubes?

According to Maynard, nanotubes are a product of nanotechnology research, one he considers the “poster child” of nanotechnology. The nanotubes are cylindrical structures comprised of carbon atoms that have been rolled together. Maynard’s study found that when mice were exposed to nanotubes, they developed asbestos-induced symptoms within the lungs. While he and other researchers consider nanotubes to be safe – when encased – the risk occurs when nanotubes are incinerated or broken.

Nanotubes are currently being used in:

* a variety of sports equipment

* bicycle frames

* tennis rackets

* electronic gas detectors

* radios

Additionally, because of the strength of nanotubes, many consider its future use to vastly effect several business ventures and areas, and be widely used in industries including:

* aerospace

* automobile

* airplanes

* television box productions

* medical

* environmental uses

Working with Nanotubes

While the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is doing research on nanotoxicology, there is little knowledge or research currently available regarding the safety of using nanotechnology. Additionally, Dr. Maynard noted that because of the ever-increasing nanotechnology industry, which is likely to be worth $2.6 trillion by 2014, it will be difficult to adequately and accurately assess nanotechnology safety because of the technology’s quick growth, which is also being used in the food industry.

Transparency of nanotoxicology among some nanotechnologically-produced products may fall into the hands of manufacturers and producers, which John M. Balbus, health program chief for the Environmental Defense Fund who was interviewed in a Washington Post article on nanotechnology, said could either be a very good thing with open communications, or a very bad thing replicating the mistakes made among the construction industry’s use of asbestos. However, he noted that upfront communication regarding the dangers of nanotechnology with the public may increase because of the previous mistakes made by other industries in hiding mesothelioma conditions from the public.

Finding Help with Nanotube Related Mesothelioma

Individuals, especially nanotube factory workers who have previously worked with carbon nanotubes or have been exposed to the potential dangers associated with the nanotubes and developing mesothelioma should receive medical attention immediately.
It may also become necessary for these individuals to locate a law firm with knowledge of mesothelioma-related litigation in order to develop a mesothelioma lawsuit.

Because of the nature of the industry and the continued funding flooding into carbon nanotube research it is important to develop a lawsuit that will also alert others, in a similar predicament, and provide aware of the potentially serious health risks associated with nanotechnology. Further, because only 5 percent of the funding, which consists of billions of dollars annually, provided by the National Nanotechnology Institute is going toward health and safety research, it is important for individuals with nanotube-induced mesothelioma to develop a lawsuit that may offer monetary compensation to victims suffering from this irreversible and deadly lung cancer.

For more information on nanotechnology-induced mesothelioma, visit http://mesothelioma.legalview.com/. Individuals may also browse the LegalView homepage at http://www.LegalView.com to learn about other issues such as the Cipro black box labeling or the Chantix risks.

Natural Methods for Lowering Cholesterol

If preventative measures aren’t taken immediately, the risk of a heart attack and other cardiovascular ailments will escalate as an individual gets older. There are two types of cholesterol. The first is known as LDL or low-density lipoprotein. This is better known as bad cholesterol. Too much LDL can result in health problems.

Fortunately the body can counter LDL with HDL or high-density lipoprotein, also known as good cholesterol. It’s necessary to achieve a balance between the two types to ensure that the heart, blood circulation and all other systems in the body are healthy.

Taking a blood test is the only way to figure out one’s cholesterol levels. Patients with a score ranging from 4.4 to 7.1 are at a low risk for heart attacks. Any figure higher than that is unsafe while the risks are significantly lower for anything below that.

Engaging in physical activity on a daily basis is the natural way to reduce cholesterol. A individual can walk briskly every other day and use the weight machines at the gym in between.

Studies show that working the muscles is safer and more efficient than using prescription medications that are known to have side effects. The same applies for food supplements as the human body requires exercise to keep it working.

Eating properly is another solution. This could entail modifying one’s eating habits but the long term results are worthwhile. It will be necessary to reduce consumption of red meat, other oily foods and junk food such as cake, bread, cookies, candy bars, French fries and potato chips.

An additional way to lower cholesterol naturally is by changing the methods of cooking food. One could try boiling, steaming or the fast method of microwaving rather than frying.

Doctors used to encourage adults and children to consume milk. While milk can help strengthen the bones as one matures, it also contains certain ingredients that are unsafe. This should be replaced with non-fat milk or soy milk which may taste slightly different but is considerably healthier.

Drinking large amounts of water and natural fruit juice is highly recommended because it also contains the properties that can reduce cholesterol just like eating fruit before it’s mixed in the blender.

Unsweetened tea is safe for consumption as well. It may have a different taste so blending a packet of Equal or Nutrasweet can add some flavor.

Monitoring food and drink intake is the best method for controlling cholesterol levels and boosting overall health. Although the initial blood test may yield distressing numbers, the situation can be improved with proper diet and exercise.

Living a healthier lifestyle is not expensive if one puts forth the effort. Decreasing cholesterol is feasible. It is preferable to ending up at the hospital with health complications that could mean life or death.
